High sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas concentration (red) from volcanic activity of Mt. Kanlaon from October 10-12.
(14 October 2026, Quezon City) The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) generated a map showing the Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) column density within a height of 15km from the Kanlaon Volcano on 09 October to 12 October, before and after the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on 10 October 2026. The heightened SO2 concentrations were observed in the vicinity of Kanlaon upon eruption and spread northwesterly on 11-12 October, possibly affecting the air quality in some areas of Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, and Aklan.
SO2 is primarily used to detect and track volcanic plumes because it is released during volcanic eruptions, and it occurs in low concentrations in clean air. The atmospheric data was obtained from the Sentinel-5P satellite, which analyzes spectral fingerprints of different gases using an optical imaging spectrometer.
PhilSA’s support through the analysis of satellite data provides wide-area coverage that assists the relevant agencies in monitoring the situation. The data does not directly represent ground-level concentrations but may be used to support air quality management and volcanic activity assessment alongside other monitoring data.
